There’s no question that fall protection is paramount to any worksite. However, choosing the right fall equipment doesn’t have to be daunting. There’s no reason for fall protection to be complicated. The basics of fall protection equipment are relatively simple. Continue reading to find out more about the basics of fall protection equipment.
Anchorage
The securing points for every fall arrest system are known as anchors. It’s absolutely imperative for anchors to withstand the allowable arresting forces if a fall occurs. There are many different types of anchors available. Some of the more common types of anchors include web tie-off straps, cable chokers, roof anchors, and weld-on D-ring plates. The type you need will vary depending on your specific circumstances.
Body Support
Body support is exactly what it sounds like. It’s merely a harness that is worn to allow the force placed on the body in the event of a fall to be distributed to the shoulders, chest, pelvis, and upper thighs. This dramatically reduces the risk of injury if a fall does happen. There are many different types of body harnesses, and the one you need will depend on your intended use for them. A few common uses include work positioning, ladder climbing, and descent control.
Connectors
The device that links the operator’s full-body harness to an anchor is known as the connector. The most commonly used connectors are shock-absorbing lanyards and self-retracting lifelines. Keep in mind that when connectors are used in a fall restraint system, the connector absolutely must be short enough so that the operator can’t reach a fall hazard.
Descent and Rescue
A fall protection system can’t be complete without descent and rescue devices. This is another component that is exactly what it sounds like. These are devices used in emergencies when quick escape or rescue could mean the difference between life and death. When it comes to descent and rescue devices, you have a plethora of options to choose from. These include suspension trauma straps, tripod and winches, Rollgliss descent devices, and others. Again, the descent and rescue devices you choose will depend on their intended purpose and your specific working environment.
