According to OSHA and ASME, only authorized professionals should be allowed to conduct wire rope inspections. Proper wire rope inspections should follow these guidelines:
- Make sure all parts of the sling are visible. Lay the sling out, so that every piece is accessible.
- Clean dirt and debris from wires to make visual inspections easier. The best tools for this are wire brushes and rags.
- Be sure to give the rope a thorough, systematic examination, inspecting its entire length. While doing this, make sure to pay special attention to sections that show the most wear.
- Pay attention to end attachments and fittings, as well as sections of the sling that are adjacent to the fittings.
- Make sure to label and identify slings that are inspected.
- Dispose of rejected rope immediately.
